 THE BRADFORD AREA:

Population, qualifications and education

General

  • Bradford is England's 4th largest metropolitan area. It covers the city of Bradford, Keighley, Ilkley, Shipley, Saltaire, Haworth, Bingley, Baildon and many other villages.

  • The metropolitan area is bordered by North Yorkshire, Leeds, Kirklees, Calderdale and Lancashire. Its 2001 Census population is 467,665.

  • The population is growing steadily: Bradford Council projects a 4% increase over the next 20 years.

  • Approximately 22% of the population are from ethnic minority groups, this is set to grow to 35% over the next two decades.


Qualifications

Education

  • The following secondary level school provision is in place:

  • Fifteen community schools

  • One voluntary controlled school (Ilkley Grammar)

  • Eight voluntary aided schools. There are four which are Roman Catholic, two Church of England and two others.

  • Four foundation schools

  • One Academy (Dixons City Academy)

  • Five independent schools.
